Welcome to our new Tune in Tokyo blog at tumblr.com!
It’s going to be a busy week ahead! We’re getting ready for the Cosplay in America Book Release Party at Royal/T on Sunday, May 23rd! Photographer Ejen Chuang, who documented American cosplayers at conventions across the country, is hosting a release party and exhibition at the fabulous maid cafe in Culver City, California from 12 PM - 5 PM. Cosplayers from the book will be in attendance, and everyone is invited to dress up or cosplay! The Tune in Tokyo DJs will be spinning J-Pop, K-Pop, anime tunes, and global pop during the event, so be sure to come out and dance with us!
Later that evening, we’ll be heading over to Mandrake for Get Hired or get Fired, a work-themed costume party hosted by our friends at fashion blog Zippercut!
The following Friday, May 28th, Tune in Tokyo returns to 2nd Street Jazz for our Rock & Electro Showcase! We will be welcoming F.size.free: Eiji Solo Project straight from Tokyo, Japan! This special appearance comes courtesy of Kanzen ni Jrock! Be sure to check out their fantastic site for information on upcoming Jrock shows in the U.S., and great Jrock news and interviews!
We will also be joined by LA-based hard rock band Dig Jelly, fronted by Japanese singer-songwriter Rayko! If you’ve ever seen them perform live, you know why it’s going to be an awesome night! If you haven’t seen them perform, you’re in for a real treat! They recently released a great new EP titled Predicate! You can hear selections from the album on their official MySpace site.
The third addition to our lineup is dance-electro artist Maganda! Inspired by European electronic beats and the cool retro sound of Shibuya-Kei, Maganda will get everybody moving with a sound that spans LA, New York city, and the chic streets of Tokyo! Be sure to check out their new collaboration with Daniel Blak, The City at Night. There is also a smooth remix version by DO NOT FEED THE DJ!
On Sunday, July 4th, Tune in Tokyo will be teaming up with DO NOT FEED THE DJ and the Diamond Gyaru-Sa for a special event at 2nd Street Jazz! Details are coming soon!
The summer continues with a Back to School party on August 19th. This is our big seifuku bash, so its never too early to start getting your uniform ready!
In the meantime, there are many great Japanese and Korean artists coming to Los Angeles and the West Coast! JYP + 2AM hits up the Wiltern on Sunday evening, May 23rd. We’re really excited about the Wonder Girls & 2 PM show at the Palladium on June 11th! We’re thrilled with their success in the U.S. and look forward to seeing what they do next!
Miyavi brings his Neo Tokyo Samurai Black World tour to LA’s Club Nokia on June 12th, and Grove of Anaheim on June 13th. Jin Akanishi of KAT-TUN also plays Club Nokia, on June 19th. Then, Akihabara’s amazing idols AKB48 perform at Anime Expo July 1st, while Megumi Nakajima and May’N of Macross Frontier perform at Anime Expo July 2nd! For our friends in San Francisco, Brown Eyed Girls will be at the MYX Mash on May 22nd.
Tune in Tokyo friend and fashion blogger La Carmina has been having some awesome adventures covering the underground scene in Tokyo recently. Be sure to check out her blog for pics and details on Japan’s goth-industrial nightlife!
This Friday in Los Angeles I’ll be spinning, along with DJ Del and DJ Tora, at the LA Weekend event held by the LA Weekly, to benefit the Charles Mingus Youth Center. It’s going to be held at the beautiful Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, and will feature performances by Courtney Cruz and Devil’s Playground, Ja Prawn, and more! Catch us in the lobby dropping J-Pop and Global Pop from 8 - 11 PM. Tickets are just $12.50. It’s all for a good cause!
